A Whirlwind Vacation

First, I have to apologize for not posting in a VERY long time..but it will be worth it to you all! My parents FINALLY got here for their visit to our home in Germany (YEY!) and we have been non-stop traveling! These expeditions will require multiple posts so please check back soon and OFTEN! Mom and Dad got here this first week of June and the first stop on our european vacation was.. NORMANDY! Before we went to Normandy we took a couple days to show them our local area. We stopped by Cochem and the American WWII Cemetary in Luxembourg.
We stumbled upon a small band in Cochem

Enjoying some ice cream!

The chapel on the cemetary grounds

After we went to the American cemetary, we stopped by the German cemetary down the road.. such a difference.. the Germans did not want to celebrate losing the war and you can see this in their WWII cemetaries..

There were three soldiers per head stone..

Then to finish off the day.. a stop in Trier for sightseeing..lunch..and shopping!

The next day it was off to Normandy. It was quite a LONG and BORING ride (7 hours of countryside) but it was so worth it! We booked a room at a charming hotel in Bayeux France, about 5 minutes from Utah beach (of the D-Day Invasion). The hotel Churchill was perfect, full of european charm and LOTS of WWII memorabilia.

Our traditional European room!

Loved this hotel!

Our room was right behind the armoire

View of the courtyard from our window
It was a little rainy at our arrival in Bayeux..but we didn't let that stop us. We went and visited one of the UNESCO Heritage sites (The Bayeux Tapestry) and then toured around town. We had a nice dinner then in for the night!! Monday and Tuesday were touring days!

Cute story about the Bayeux Cathedral.. it was the only Cathedral in the Normandy area where there were known Germans that was NOT bombed. The people of the area petitioned the British NOT to bomb the church as before the bombing the Germans had vacated :)
